Parts and assembly

Print

  • Battery base, flat. Holds 2 × AA cells (one each side of the centre), the switch and the wiring.
  • USB-C base, flat. A threaded USB-C connector screws into the side; holds the switch and the wiring.
  • Cover, upside down. A flat plate with magnet pockets and a thread for the female DC jack; your lamp rests on it.
  • Pole, standing up. One per light height (80, 100, 120 mm).
  • LED cap, upside down.
  • Window tube in clear PETG, or use a clear acrylic tube .

Buy

  • 2 × AA cells, alkaline or lithium (rechargeable NiMH give too little voltage for a white LED), and AA contact plates: a + and a − plate for each cell.
  • A threaded USB-C panel connector (the same thread as your usbc_pole_threaded part: Ø10 grip thread, pitch 1.25) and a USB-C cable and charger.
  • DC barrel connectors, 5.5 × 2.1 mm: a female panel jack (DC-022B, M8 threaded nose) and a threaded male jack (usually M8 × 0.75; set its thread under Male jack thread).
  • 8 mm wide-angle white LED (straw-hat). Optional 2.2 Ω resistor in series.USB gives 5 V: a resistor in series (about 47 Ω for a 0.5 W LED), or a 5 V LED.
  • RS-12 mini rocker switch (2-pin ON/OFF, 15 × 10 mm bezel, KCD11 size); it snaps into a 13.5 × 9 mm cutout. Thin hook-up wire.
  • 8 × 1.5 mm disc magnets: 2 for the cover, 2 for each lamp.
  • 2 × M2 × 6 self-tapping screws; for the keyhole, a wall screw with a head under 7 mm.

Assemble

  1. Glue the magnets into the cover. Test against a lamp first so they attract, not repel.
  2. Snap the rocker switch into the cutout in the side of the base from outside.
  3. Screw the female DC jack up into the thread through the cover's centre from below, its nose standing up. Its nut is not needed.
  4. Slide the contact plates into the slots and wire the two cells in series: battery + → switch → jack, jack → battery −.
  5. Screw the USB-C connector into the thread in the side of the base from outside, and wire: USB + → switch → resistor → jack, jack → USB −.
  6. Push the LED into the cap, dome down. Lead its wires through the grooves, down the window and out of the pole's foot, and solder them to the male jack. Screw the male jack into the thread inside the pole's foot, barrel pointing down, until its thread is all the way in.
  7. Join pole, window and cap. Screw the cover onto the base.
  8. Set a lamp on the base (the magnets line it up), drop the pole through its centre hole onto the female jack: it plugs in and stands on the jack's nose.
